200px-vincent_willem_van_gogh_002“OMG! So you’re saying that you were hospitalised in RIPAS for suicide attempts for the second time?” I couldn’t believe what I just heard.

“Yeah, it just kept coming, the thoughts, I know its horrible, but I just can’t help it. Whenever I have problems, I mean big problems, I just can’t get it off my mind, I become too sad and lost my mood, it comes to a point where it’s becoming too unbearable and I just want to end it”, Khairul replied. Khairul, a professional is in his late twenties smiles a lot when we had our conversation. Unfortunately behind the smile, theres something deeply bothering him.

“Are you ok now? Are you feeling better?”, I tried to make sure that he was ok.

“Im doing great, but whenever I have serious problems that can’t be handled by me alone, I’ll have a visit to my doctor at Psychiatric Unit in RIPAS. Normally they’ll prescribe me the happy pills (Prozac), amazingly after 2 weeks on medication all the thoughts starting to disappear and I no longer feel sad. I’m not the worst though, I met a girl who jumped off a building, cut her wrists, substance abused and much more unthinkable suicide attempts while I was visiting the Psychiatric Unit”, he smiled again. I seriously can’t tell if he was depressive, he’s too friendly for that.

I changed the topic of conversation afterward. I found the topic to be uneasy for me since I had little knowledge in it and I didn’t want to offend him.  But in the end, I asked him one question for the sake of my readers.

“Do you recommend people with the same symptom to come forward and get help from RIPAS Psychiatric Unit?”

“Yeah, it will  save them a whole lot of trouble.  I know someone who wasted his future and studies because of depressive thoughts yet too scared to go to RIPAS Psychiatric Unit to get help, I don’t know what he’s waiting for, I’m sure there’s no mystery in it, its simply clinical depression”.

(From Wikipedia) Major depressive disorder (also known as clinical depression, major depression, unipolar depression, or unipolar disorder) is a mental disorder characterized by an all-encompassing low mood accompanied by low self-esteem, and loss of interest or pleasure in normally enjoyable activities. The term “major depressive disorder” was selected by the American Psychiatric Association to designate this symptom cluster as a mood disorder in the 1980 version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) classification, and has become widely used since.

The general term depression is often used to describe the disorder, but as it can also be used to describe other types of psychological depression, more precise terminology is preferred for the disorder in clinical and research use. Major depression is a disabling condition which adversely affects a person’s family, work or school life, sleeping and eating habits, and general health. In the United States, approximately 3.4% of people with major depression commit suicide, and up to 60% of all people who commit suicide have depression or another mood disorder.

My advice for you guys with the same symptoms, go and get help!
